Why We Explain Before We Install
Flooring La Porte installs floors in houses built on concrete slabs, through long humid summers and the occasional heavy storm season. That shapes the advice we give. A product that works well in a dry climate over a wood-framed floor can behave very differently over a slab near the coast, and we would rather you hear that from us before installation than discover it a year later.
We keep our recommendations tied to how a material is made. Click-lock vinyl, glue-down engineered wood, mortar-set porcelain and stretched carpet each have their own failure points and their own install requirements. When we explain those plainly, most people can make the choice themselves, and the floor they end up with is one they understand how to care for.

Flooring We Install
Most of our work is hardwood flooring, luxury vinyl plank and tile flooring, with laminate flooring, carpet installation and carpet tile for rooms where comfort or cost matters more. We also lay luxury vinyl tile, vinyl composition tile for laundry and utility spaces, and stair flooring that matches the rooms it connects. Each service page covers how that floor is built, where it performs well and where it does not.

Hardwood Flooring
Solid and engineered hardwood chosen for your subfloor, moisture-tested first, then nailed, glued or floated by the method that suits it.

Luxury Vinyl Plank
Rigid core and glue-down vinyl plank installed over a subfloor we test for moisture and flatten first, with trim and transitions finished cleanly.
Tile Flooring
Porcelain, ceramic and natural stone tile set over a flattened, crack-isolated base, with the right thinset, grout and movement joints for each room.
Laminate Flooring
Click-lock laminate with the right AC rating, a moisture barrier over your slab and expansion gaps that keep the floor flat for years.
Carpet Installation
Wall-to-wall carpet matched to your rooms by fiber, pile and pad density, then power-stretched and seamed so it stays flat.
Carpet Tile
Modular carpet squares on a releasable adhesive, laid over a prepped slab, so one stained or worn tile can be lifted and replaced without redoing the room.
Luxury Vinyl Tile
Tile-format vinyl that looks like stone or ceramic, stays warm underfoot and shrugs off spills, installed as rigid click-lock or full-spread glue-down.
Vinyl Composition Tile
Tough, low-cost 12-inch VCT for laundry rooms, workshops and checkerboard kitchens, glued to a tested slab and finished with protective polish coats.
Stair Flooring
Hardwood treads, vinyl and laminate with matching nosings, or wrapped carpet, each measured and fitted to every step of your staircase.

What Moves the Price of a New Floor
Two rooms of the same size can price very differently. The flooring itself is one piece of it, but labor, prep and the condition of what sits under your current floor often matter just as much. Here is what we look at when we put a number together.
We measure the rooms, look at the subfloor and then give you a line-by-line estimate so you can see what each part of the job costs. Get your quote by phone and we will set a time to measure.
- Material and grade
- Wear layer thickness on vinyl, AC rating on laminate, species and construction on hardwood, and porcelain versus ceramic on tile all change the cost per square foot. Thicker wear layers and harder cores cost more and last longer.
- Square footage and layout
- Open, rectangular rooms install faster than spaces broken up by closets, angled walls and hallways. Diagonal or herringbone patterns add cuts and waste, so they need more product and more hours.
- Removal of the old floor
- Pulling carpet and pad is quick. Removing glued tile or old sheet vinyl, and scraping the thinset or adhesive left behind, takes far longer and is often the biggest labor line on the estimate.
- Subfloor condition
- A slab with cracks, dips or high moisture needs grinding, patching, self-leveler or a vapor barrier before installation. Wood subfloors may need loose sections screwed down or damaged panels replaced.
- Stairs and transitions
- Each stair tread and riser is cut and fitted by hand, so stairs are priced by the step rather than the square foot. Thresholds, reducers and new baseboard or quarter round add to the total as well.
How a Flooring Job Runs
Most installs follow the same four stages. The prep stage is the one people underestimate, and it is the one that decides how long the floor lasts.
- 1
Phone call and measure
You tell us the rooms, how they are used and what you are leaning toward. We come out, measure, check the slab or subfloor and bring samples so you can see them in your own light.
- 2
Choosing the floor and the estimate
We walk through two or three options that fit the space and your budget, and explain why each one would or would not suit it. You get a written estimate with material, removal, prep and installation listed separately.
- 3
Prep and acclimation
Wood and some laminates sit in your home for a few days to reach the indoor moisture level. On install day we remove the old floor, test and correct the subfloor, and lay underlayment or a vapor retarder where the product calls for it.
- 4
Installation and walkthrough
We install the floor with the expansion gaps the manufacturer specifies, then fit trim, transitions and stair nosing. Before we leave we walk the rooms with you, point out care instructions and clean up.
How We Help You Pick and Install the Right Floor
A floor fails for physical reasons: moisture, movement, a subfloor out of flat, or a product used outside its limits. We work around those causes from the first conversation to the last piece of trim.
- 01
Straight talk on trade-offs
Every floor gives something up. Solid hardwood feels and sounds best but moves with humidity. Rigid-core vinyl shrugs off spills but can feel hollow over an uneven slab. We tell you both sides so you are not sold on the one feature a showroom leads with.
- 02
Moisture testing before installation
Concrete slabs release water vapor for years. We test the slab before wood, laminate or glue-down products go in, then choose the right vapor retarder or adhesive for the reading. Skipping that step is the usual reason planks cup or adhesive lets go.
- 03
Flat substrates, not just level ones
Click-lock floors and large-format tile both need a flat surface, typically within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet. We check with a straightedge, grind high spots and fill low ones with patch or self-leveler before a single row goes down.
- 04
Your rooms protected while we work
We cover adjacent floors, mask doorways where dust can travel and keep cut stations outside when the weather allows. At the end we haul off old flooring and scrap and vacuum the work area.
Flooring Questions We Hear Most
Can I put hardwood over a concrete slab?
Yes, but usually not solid hardwood nailed directly to concrete. Engineered hardwood, which has a real wood top layer over a cross-ply core, handles slab moisture and seasonal humidity much better. We glue it down or float it over a vapor-retarding underlayment after testing the slab. Our hardwood flooring page goes into the details.
Is luxury vinyl plank really waterproof?
The planks themselves are, especially rigid-core SPC products, so a spill or pet accident will not swell them. Water can still travel through the seams and sit on the slab underneath if it is left long enough, which is why we seal perimeters in bathrooms and laundry rooms. It is a very water-tolerant floor, not a flood barrier.
What is the difference between laminate and vinyl plank?
Laminate has a high-density fiberboard core under a photographic layer and a hard melamine wear surface. It resists scratches well and feels more like wood underfoot, but the core can swell if water reaches the edges. Vinyl plank uses a plastic or stone-plastic core that does not absorb water, so it suits kitchens and baths better.
Do you move furniture and remove the old floor?
We remove and haul away the old flooring as part of the job, and that cost is listed on your estimate. We can move standard furniture for you. Electronics, china cabinets and items full of breakables are best emptied or moved ahead of time.
How long does installation take?
A few rooms of click-lock vinyl or laminate usually take one to two days. Tile takes longer because thinset and grout need time to cure, and glue-down hardwood needs time for the adhesive to set. We give you a realistic schedule when we write the estimate, including any acclimation days.
Do you offer a warranty on your work?
Yes. We provide a 1-year workmanship warranty on all installations. The flooring product itself is covered separately by its manufacturer, and we will explain what that coverage includes for the floor you choose.
Which floor holds up best to dogs?
Porcelain tile is the hardest surface and will not scratch from claws. Among plank floors, vinyl with a thick wear layer and laminate with a high AC rating hold up well and handle accidents better than wood. Softer hardwood species show scratches quickly, so we steer pet owners toward harder species or a different material.
